My name is Natalja Volkova. For many years, I have worked in the funeral profession. It is a field people usually encounter unexpectedly — at a moment when the ground seems to disappear beneath their feet.

At first, my role was clear and practical: helping families with documents, arranging funerals, and handling the many tasks that arise after the death of a loved one. I met people during the hardest hours of their lives and tried to make everything as careful and dignified as possible.

But over time, I realized that organization alone is not enough. In those moments, people need more than a service — they need another human being beside them. Someone who can calmly explain things, offer support, and stay present through confusion, tears, and silence.

That was when I understood that I wanted to work differently — in a more human and compassionate way, with greater care for those living through loss. This led me to train in end-of-life support and become a death doula.

This knowledge changed the way I see my profession. I realized how important it is for families to have not only a funeral professional beside them, but also someone who can gently guide them through the first steps of grief — helping them orient themselves, offering support, and explaining what is happening and what comes next.

Today, my work brings together two worlds. On one side is the practical part of funeral care, where everything must be handled accurately, respectfully, and without unnecessary stress. On the other side is human accompaniment: attention to the feelings of loved ones, respect for the memory of the person who died, and space for farewell.

I have a dream. I hope that one day every funeral home will have death doulas working alongside funeral professionals. That families will receive not only organizational help, but also real support — calm, gentle, and deeply human.

Because death is not only a procedure.

It is a moment when people especially need someone beside them.
